Altofts Community Book Scheme is a community library based at The Brig. It isn’t a traditional library. It’s a way of sharing books across the community. We have a wide selection of very good quality fiction and non-fiction books for children, adults and everyone in between. We also stock a range of large print and audio books.
Anyone can join and membership is just £1, which entitles you to your first book. After that the scheme works like a book swap – you can keep any book for as long as you want and you can take out as many books as you bring in.
The scheme is run solely by a group of dedicated volunteers and anyone who loves books and can spare a few hours a month would be welcome to join our team. No previous experience is required and we always work in pairs so it’s also a good way of meeting new people as well as supporting the local community. We are open between 2pm and 5pm every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and between 10am and 1pm every Saturday.
The Book Scheme also works closely with all three local infant and junior schools.
We also have a lively Knit and Natter group that meets during Book Scheme opening hours every 1st and 3rd Wednesday in the month. Just bring along your wool and needles.
Or why not try out the Altofts Readers Group that meets every third Tuesday 7-9pm in The Brig? New members are always welcome and the books discussed are provided free by Wakefield Council’s library services.
We are delighted to announce that our Book Scheme is now registered with Wakefield Children’s University.
