In August 2015 our Community Cycling Club was formally registered and affiliated to British Cycling. The aim for the club is to promote community based cycling in the wider Altofts area. A grant of £2,000 has been secured from Go-Cycling to help with the establishment of the club.
The club emerged from a group of regular cyclists, associated in different ways with The Brig, who were regularly cycling on Saturday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. These rides were mainly using mountain bikes and following mainly off-road routes but there were also some rides on road bikes. Regular attendees including a number of younger people aged between 13 and 16. In the summer of 2015 a decision was taken to form a community based club.
The club will seek to grow its membership over the coming winter period and seek the views of members about the overall ambitions of the club. The immediate focus remains that of community cycling with a strong social aspect. The club is already working in collaboration with Wakefield Cycle Forum with a view to supporting the development of cycling routes in the local area, in particular the Wakefield Waterfront Greenway. It is also hoped that our association with the Forum will see the growth of The Brig and our new community café as a landmark for local cyclists. As well as refreshments, those cyclists calling at The Brig will be able to purchase discounted cycling spares and use maintenance equipment.
Membership of the club is just £5 per month and is free to those under 16 or those in full time education who have yet to reach their 21st birthday. Day ride membership is also available at £2 for those over 16 and £1 for those under 16. Any rider under 16 must be accompanied by a nominated Responsible Adult for each ride in which they participate. Click here to see full Club Rules.
It is early days for the club so please be patient as we get everything sorted.
